Doris M. Anderson Senior Award

Eligibility Criteria |

1. The award will be granted to a student who is entering the Senior year of a Home Economics / Family Sciences/ Nutrition / Consumer Science / Human Ecology or related program at an accredited Maritime University.
2. The student must be a graduate of a Prince Edward Island High School.
3. This award is to be based on academic merit, a demonstrated positive attitude toward the profession of Home Economics, and participation in non-academic activities.
4. The Selection Committee will include the Chair of the Prince Edward Island Home Economics Association Awards Committee and two other members of the Association.
5. The amount of the award for fall 2011 will be five hundred dollars ($500).

2011- Rilla Reardon
Rilla Reardon is in her 4th year studying Human Nutrition at St. FX University. Rilla is a graduate of Charlottetown Rural High School and is from York. Rilla has started the Integrated Internship and is looking forward to completing it on PEI next summer after graduation. Congratulations Rilla!
2010 - Krista McLellan
Krista McLellan is a graduate of Charlottetown Rural High School who is currently attending Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax. Krista has an excellent standing in her courses and volunteered at the IWK developing five nutrition education resources for their patients. She has used her "Eating Well on a Budget" resource to educate participants of the Gottingen Street Salvation Army Addictions and Rehabilitation Program. Her volunteer work lead to paid positions with IWK Food Services - first as a general worker and now as a supervisor. Her passion in life is to help others feel the same joy from food as she does. |
2009 -Jennifer Egan
Jennifer has combined volunteering at the QEH and the Family and Nutritional Sciences Student Committee with running and participating in the PEI Marathon
Weekend. She completed a summer project at UPEI with Dr. Katherine
Gottschall-Pass involving interactions of dietary cranberry and
cholesterol consumption on biological markers of oxidative
stress, and has worked for Cows Inc. and as a waitress. Jennifer is presently completing her honours research with Kathy
Gottschall-Pass and is described as a highly motivated and disciplined student with top marks
at UPEI. Congratulations Jennifer!
2008 - Doreen Pippy
The 2008 Doris M. Anderson Award was presented to UPEI student Doreen Pippy, a 1994 graduate of Charlottetown Rural High, who actively volunteers with many different organizations including the Soup Kitchen, Healthy Eating Alliance, PEI Food Security Network, and School Breakfast Program. Doreen has attended an ACHES (Association of Canadian Home Economics Students) conference and has travelled to Kenya with Farmers Helping Farmers. Along with maintain good grades, and her busy volunteer schedule, Doreen also works in International Education and Development for the V.P. of Academic Development at UPEI. Doreen plans to complete a Masters in applied Health Services at UPEI and work towards improving health in PEI.

2007 - Lisa S. MacDonald
Lisa is a graduate of Bluefield High School and is in her fourth year of the Family and Nutritional Sciences Program and is currently an intern in the UPEI Integrated Dietetic Internship Program.
Lisa also holds a university degree in Psychology. She has been employed as a student assistant at UPEI.and has volunteered with UPEI’s WUSC Student Refugee Program and with her church. Lisa is interested in international development, has traveled for two years through South East Asia, Australia, China, Hong Kong and India. Lisa combines these activities with a strong academic performance!

2006 - Jane Caiger
Congratulations to Jane Caiger, the 2006 recipient of the Doris M. Anderson Award. Jane is a graduate of Charlottetown Rural High School and is in her final year of the Family and Nutritional Sciences Program and plans to graduate with Honours from UPEI. She was accepted into the highly competitive Integrated Dietetic Internship Program and plans to work in the community as a Registered Dietitian following graduation. Jane has been a volunteer with the Upper Room, the Humane Society and Cat Action Team, Chances Family Centre and assisted with the Healthy Eating Alliance and Healthy Snack Program at Glen Stewart Stewart School. Jane is Vice President of the FANS Society at UPEI this year, and was a lab assistant in 2005. She has had successful course placements at Whisperwood Villa, Prince County Hospital and Chances Family Centre. Jane, combines these activities with a strong academic performance! Congratulations, Jane!
